Sports

St Mary’s is proud of the involvement of our children in a wide variety of sports both withinand out of school. Games, athletics, orienteering, swimming (for children in Year 3), danceand gymnastics are taught throughout the school and we are able to benefit from twoindoor areas, the trim trail, adventure trail and our extensive playgrounds and fields. We areextremely well resourced both for the curriculum, for lunchtime activities and sports clubs. Many extra-curricular activities are offered and children enjoy an exciting array of sports activities ranging from athletics, football, netball, rugby, country dancing, judo and multi-sports. Other recent opportunities have included tennis, basketball and gymnastics and we are always striving to provide a wider variety of opportunities. Some clubs are attended by all year groups whilst others are provided for specific year groups, ensuring a balance of provision across the school. In addition, clubs are provided for specific groups of children, such as gifted and talented or ‘semi-sporty’ pupils. Sports teams from St Mary’s regularly compete in local sports competitions. St Mary’s holds two major annual sports events: a non-competitive Sports Activity Morning at which children work in mixed age teams (including siblings) and participate in a wide variety of fun activities, and a competitive Sports Day in which children race against each other, competing for house points and a trophy. Parents and carers are invited to both events which are popular amongst the whole school community. An additional event is held each year and this is often for charity (for example, the Sport Relief Mile and Jump Rope for Heart raising money for the British Heart Foundation).Above all, we want children to enjoy sport so that they continue to participate in health activities throughout their lives.
